Alimony/Spousal Support

Alimony is support that one spouse may be entitled to from another spouse in the court's discretion.

Under Rhode Island Law, alimony is typically awarded as a specific amount of money for a specified period of time and is generally awarded only when it is needed for rehabilitative purposes so that the spouse receiving alimony has a reasonable time to reestablish himself or herself in the employment marketplace or to obtain job skills to become self-supporting and self-sufficient.

In some cases, a spouse may be entitled to permanent alimony.
